Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchangers

If you are looking to transmit heat from one specific medium to a different medium, a heat exchanger is the perfect piece of equipment. Problems with contact and with mixing come as the result of a variety of reasons – the two mediums could have a wall situated in between one another. Alternatively, they could be in immediate contact. Whatever the case is, they are widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, natural gas processing, sewage treatment, petroleum refineries and a range of others. There are many examples – perhaps the best, and most well-known example to date is the heat exchanger which functions within an internal combustion engine. The heat exchanger here works when a fluid called engine coolant travels through radiator coils.

Heat exchangers take many different forms. One of these is the “shell and tube” heat exchanger. This exchanger is constituted by a series of different tubes. In one of the many tubes contained within, the fluid is either heated or cooled down. Alongside this, there is another tube, and another stream of fluid with a different purpose. The second fluid runs past the fluid which is to be heated or cooled (in the other tube) and either absorbs or provides the heat that is needed. Within the exchanger you will find what is known as a tube “bundle”. This bundle is always made up of a number of separate tubes with different functions. This kind of heat exchanger, which is generally quite tough on account of how it is shaped, will usually be used when the pressure of the travelling fluid is past 30 bar and the temperature higher than 260 degrees Celsius.

One more example of a common exchanger is the “plate heat exchanger”. This type of exchanger is made up of a number of separate plates that are made up of passages for fluid flow and the transfer of heat, and large surface areas. There are certain advantages that this type of exchanger possesses over the shell and tube exchanger, depending on the specific situation. In certain spaces, this type of exchanger can be more practical – and a lot more effective.
